Step 2 · Evaluate on your data

Run eMondrian yourself.

Community is free and open source. Excel works out of the box. For Power BI and AI agents, request a free evaluation key.

1 Install Community

Requirements: Git, Windows 10/11 or a supported Linux distribution, administrator rights, a free port 80, and about 2 GB of disk space. The setup script installs Docker if it is not available yet.

git clone https://github.com/eMondrian/emondrian-community.git
cd emondrian-community

# Linux
./setup.sh

# Windows (PowerShell)
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\windows-setup.ps1

When it's running, open the main page at http://localhost. The installation includes sample data (FoodMart, OnTime on ClickHouse), the Schema Editor, and the Web OLAP client.

2 Connect your database and describe the model

Point eMondrian to your database via JDBC and describe cubes, measures, and hierarchies in the Schema Editor. eMondrian uses the Mondrian schema format, so existing Mondrian schemas usually work as they are.

3 Connect your tools

Tool What you need License
Excel Data → From Analysis Services → http://<server>/xmla Free, no key
Power BI Get data → Analysis Services → Connect live DAX module: evaluation key
AI agents Add the eMondrian MCP server to your MCP client MCP module: evaluation key (same as DAX)
Writeback Excel input forms and writeback-enabled cubes Writeback module: evaluation on request

4 Get a free evaluation key

The evaluation key unlocks the DAX and MCP modules for 30 days. Writeback evaluation is available on request. Excel and the core engine never need a key.

  • check_circle Valid for 30 days from activation.
  • check_circle Works online (paste the code) or offline (upload a license file).
  • check_circle When it expires, DAX and MCP stop; Excel and MDX keep working.
  • check_circle Need more time for your proof of concept? Tell us briefly about your project and we will extend it.

Enter your email, get the key within minutes, and activate it online or offline.

Proof-of-concept checklist

A good evaluation takes 2 to 4 weeks. This is what we recommend checking. It's also what we look at if you ask us for help.

1

Model

Describe 1 or 2 cubes on your own data: key measures, dimensions, and hierarchies.

2

Excel

Rebuild your most important PivotTables and compare numbers with your current source.

3

Power BI

Connect 3 to 5 real reports. Check that every visual loads and the numbers match.

4

Performance

Test on realistic data volume and concurrent users. Note slow queries.

5

Report back

Send us DAX queries that fail. That is how compatibility improves, for you and everyone else.
